“The Huntington/Seal Beach Surfrider Chapter Story”

The Huntington/Seal Beach Surfrider Chapter operates solely on Donations and Fundraising. The Chapter always has Issues or Programs requiring funds to operate.

Chapter Board Members are Volunteers, working to protect our oceans, waves and beaches for everyone through conservation, activism, research and education (CARE)

Surfrider was founded in 1984 by Glenn Henning, Tome Pratte and other Malibu surfers who were concerned about the possible loss of their favorite surf break. Over the years Surfrider has grown to be one of the premier grassroots environmental groups fighting to preserve our precious coastal zone, we are “Keepers of the Coast”.

Our HB/SB Chapter was formed in 1989 as the Long Beach Chapter and absorbed Seal Beach and Huntington Beach because of no representation. In late 1998 the Chapter split to be the Huntington/Seal Beach Chapter we are today, leaving the Long Beach Chapter to concentrate on their Breakwater issue. Almost a 20 year old S/R Chapter!!

Currently the HB/SB Chapter has 1500 members locally and from surrounding areas, we are all volunteers in the Chapter and always need more help getting our issue together and word out. Our Chapter area includes Huntington & Seal Beach Beaches, from the San Gabriel River to the Santa Ana River and inland to the Foot Hills, or most of the San Gabriel River Watershed. Surfrider Members can work with the Chapter of their choice.

Our programs make the public aware of problems like Runoff, Litter and the use of Plastic that ends up in our Oceans and on our Beaches killing Bio Systems and wasting millions of dollars to clean up from old bad habits.

We schedule Beach Clean Ups to physically keep the Beach clean and help volunteers learn what the problems are. We also do special presentations for concerned groups who request.

The Chapter supports local issues that protect our Beaches and Ocean. Like the Orange County Sanitation District’s rate increases that allows for Secondary Waste Treatment that dumps clean Water in the Ocean rather than the Sewage as before when it was allowed. We helped defeat the 301H waiver that allowed dumping with a few other Orange County Groups.

We oppose the proposed Desalination Plant in Huntington Beach at the old deteriorated Edison Plant that was brought back to life in the energy shortage by Gov. Grey Davis during the States energy crisis. We support R4RD (Residents for Responsible Desalination) in Huntington Beach who do not want to continue the operation of the out of compliance Power Plant in an effort to supply fresh water that will not even benefit the City of Huntington Beach and continue to be a negative intrusion to the quality of life to the surrounding residential Neighborhoods, Beach and Ocean.
